SALEM - VDOT crews are fully mobilized and working around the clock to plow and treat roads in southwestern Virginia.  Efforts continue on the major routes roads as snow continues to fall in some areas.  Many primary roads (those numbered 1-599) remain covered in snow or ice and neighborhood streets have not been plowed yet.

 VDOT suggests the following:

  • Avoid driving today as many roads are snow covered and very slick.  Fewer vehicles on the roads make it easier to plow and treat roads.  As vehicles drive on snow, the more it will pack down and freeze making it harder to remove.

  • Be patient.  Crews work to plow and treat primary roads and interstates first before heading to secondary roads and neighborhood streets.  If addition snowfall covers the main routes, snow drifts onto them, or low temperatures create refreezing, then operators will return to them to make additional passes.

  • Do not expect bare pavement until temperatures rise.  Low temperatures will slow efforts and even when secondary roads and neighborhood streets are plowed snow will remain frozen on the road surface.
  • Shovel to the right when cleaning driveways.  Shoveling to the right when facing the roadway will cause less snow to be plowed back into driveways when plows come through.  Snow plow drivers sometimes make multiple passes on neighborhood roads, so if a plow passes, be aware that it may come through again later and possibly push more snow into cleared driveways.
