TRAFFIC ALERT: ROUTE 689 (IRVING ROAD) BRIDGE IN BEDFORD COUNTY CLOSED FOR LONG-TERM REPAIRS

SALEM – The Route 689 (Irving Road) bridge over the railroad tracks in Bedford County is closed for repairs until sometime next spring.

The bridge is located between Route 460 and Route 717 (Murray Hollow Road) near Irving.

The bridge was scheduled to be closed for several months later this year for major rehabilitation, but additional deterioration has been discovered in the wooden support beams, so the bridge had to be closed earlier than previously planned.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has ordered replacement support beams that will have to be custom fabricated.

Weather permitting, the bridge is expected to remain closed until spring 2018. Drivers will need to seek alternate routes around the closure.
