TRAFFIC ALERT: INTERSTATE 81 DETOUR AND EXTENDED LANE CLOSURE BEGINS TONIGHT IN BOTETOURT COUNTY
Drivers should expect delays and plan travel accordingly
SALEM, VA – Weather permitting, bridge repairs over the James River at mile marker 164 to 168 in Botetourt County will require Interstate 81 southbound to have an extended right lane closure and a detour for concrete pours beginning tonight, Wednesday, August 16.
Interstate 81 southbound from mile marker 164 to 168 will have a right lane closure in place from 6 p.m., Wednesday, August 16 until the following morning, Thursday, August 17, at 10 a.m. and at 6 p.m., on Thursday, August 17 until the following morning, Friday, August 18 at 10 a.m.
During the concrete pour, a detour will be in place each night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning for all I-81 southbound lanes. Southbound lanes will be closed and traffic will be directed to follow the motorcycle detour routes already in place.
The motorcycle detour in place on I-81 southbound begins at exit 167. All traffic must exit I-81 northbound at exit 167 and follow the motorcycle detour on Route 11 northbound to re-enter I-81 southbound at exit 162.
Drivers should expect and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible to alleviate congestion on I-81. This project is expected to be completed in fall 2017.
