September 8 - October 30, 2015: Participate in Virginia Student Travel Tally Week (STTW)
Schools across Virginia are encouraged to conduct Student Travel Tallies in classrooms during one week of their choosing in either September or October. To encourage participation, schools conducting tallies for the first time this fall will receive a SRTS banner to hang in their school. Just survey at least 80% of your classrooms and upload the data to www.saferoutesdata.org, the National Center for Safe Routes to School’s online data clearinghouse. Schools participating for a second or third time will receive STTW decals to decorate their banners. Supporting materials including principal and parent letters, flyers and tally forms are available on our Student Travel Tally Week webpage.
October 7, 2015: International Walk to School Day (iWalk)
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration with record breaking participation each October.
In 2014, 220 Virginia schools participated. Let’s see if we can hit 250 in 2015! Visit our Walk to School Day webpage for more information, and be sure to register your event on www.walkbiketoschool.org to be a part of the international celebration. Remember - October is Walk to School Month, so schools can host an event any day in the month.
The Virginia Safe Routes to School Newsletter is a great way to keep abreast of the latest SRTS developments in Virginia.
Each newsletter includes a calendar of upcoming events and features articles addressing such issues as SRTS grant opportunities and SRTS program implementation.
