A 10 Year Milestone
Although VDOT's Bristol District developed an internal awareness campaign in 1997, the first national work zone awareness week was launched in 2000 in Springfield. Learn more about the evolution of the campaign in the article "A Decade of Safety" in the March/April 2010 issue of Public Roads.
Statistics
In Virginia, there were more than 2,000 crashes in work zones on state-maintained roadways in 2008. Of those crashes, six people died and more than 1,000 were injured. The majority of crashes occurred on primary routes and involved drivers in their early 20s.
2008 Work Zone Statistics
Crashes: 2012 (11.3% Decrease over 2007 figure of 2268)
Injuries: 1001 (9.2% Decrease over 2007 figure of 1102)
Fatalities: 7 (45.5% Decrease over 2007 figure of 11)

2004 – 2278 Crashes/ 1214 Injuries
2005 – 2443 Crashes/1187 Injuries
2006 – 2350 Crashes/1098 Injuries

Crashes by State Roadway System:
- 653 occurred on the Interstate System (32.4%)
- 792 occurred on the Primary Route System (39.4%)
- 567 occurred on the Secondary Route System (28.2%)
