What's Being Done

Preliminary engineering is underway for the widening of two miles of Route 11 – Lee Highway in Washington County, from the North Corporate Limits of Bristol to Route F-310, which is the access road to Interstate 81 at Exit 10.

An information meeting was held in July 2007 to show the preliminary project design, with includes two north and southbound travel lanes, sidewalks, curbing, bike paths and a raised grass median.

A public hearing will be held in 2008 to show more detailed plans to the public. Right of way acquisition is scheduled to begin in 2010 and construction is scheduled to begin in 2013.

Benefits

In addition to providing access to many subdivisions and businesses, this section of Route 11 – Lee Highway serves as a main route between Bristol and Abingdon and an alternative route to Interstate 81. Due to commercial and retail development in the area, traffic on this section of Route 11 is expected to double by the year 2025.

These proposed improvements will provide a modern facility that can accommodate vehicle, bike and pedestrian traffic efficiently and safely.
