Project at a Glance
What's Being Done
Preliminary engineering and right of way acquisition are underway on three Route 58 widening projects between Abingdon and Damascus:Phase I – from Damascus to near Route 708–Rhea Valley: Construction of Phase I is contingent on future funding. Construction estimate: $24.8 million.
Phase II, from near Route 708–Rhea Valley to just east of Route 638: Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010. Construction estimate: $15.6 million (fully funded).
Phase III, from just east of Route 638 to near Watauga Road in Abingdon: Construction is slated to begin in 2009. This project includes the replacement of the bridge over Middle Fork Holston River. Construction estimate: $15 million (fully funded).
Benefits
Completion of the widening will provide a modern and safe four-lane facility between Abingdon and Damascus, a highly traveled route for commuter and recreational traffic.The project is part of the Route 58 Corridor Development Program to enhance the transportation network and foster economic development in southwestern Virginia.
