VDOT completed safety improvements on Route 15/17/29 near Opal on Nov. 1, more than a month ahead of its scheduled Dec. 11 completion date.
The project involved closing two of three median crossovers near Quarles Truck Stop and reconstructing the remaining crossover to provide directional left-in, left-out access.
Project Purpose and Details
The purpose of this project was to improve safety on Route 15/17/29 north of Opal by reducing the number of traffic conflicts along the corridor.
Due to the frequency of crashes and traffic flow issues, crash data from 2011-2015 was analyzed to identify potential solutions. Also considered were roadside environment, distance between intersections/crossovers, and roadway geometry. The study revealed:
- 42 percent rear-end crashes
- 38 percent angle, or turning, collisions
- 20 percent combined run-off-the-road, collision with a fixed object or non-collision
Many of the "correctable" crashes were concentrated near particular crossovers, which VDOT plans to identify over time. The Quarles Truck Stop location was first; the next to be addressed is the crossover near East Coast gas station and Clark Brothers Gun Shop. Future locations extend as far north as Route 1013 (Burke Lane).
Approximately 43,000 vehicles use Route 15/17/29 daily, according to 2015 data.
