VDOT completed construction of this project on Sept. 16, 2017. This project was Culpeper District's second SMART SCALE project to be completed.
The project replaced the T-intersection of Route 15 and Route 53 with a roundabout to improve safety and efficiency of travel. Roundabouts also help reduce crashes, fuel consumption, air pollution and roadway maintenance costs.
A shared-use path in the northwest quadrant of the roundabout connects by a crosswalk to a sidewalk on the south side. These facilities provide access to the JAUNT transit service stop adjacent to the intersection.
Approximately 6,600 vehicles use Route 15 daily, according to 2015 data. The traffic count on Route 53 is 5,200 vehicles per day.
