In Design: Route 20 at Route 231, Orange County

Cost and schedule ►

VDOT held a design public hearing on March 8, 2018 for the project to construct a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Route 20 (Constitution Highway) and Route 231 (Blue Ridge Turnpike) in Orange County.

This project is about one year ahead of the construction scheduled presented at the public hearing. The project was advertised for construction bids on Nov. 5, 2019. Construction is slated to begin in 2020.

Between 2010 and 2015, 26 crashes occurred at this intersection resulting in 32 injuries. VDOT has installed rumble strips and intersection ahead signs with advance warning flashers to advise motorists to use caution approaching the area but the rate of crashes has remained consistent.

To improve safety and reduce crashes, VDOT will replace the existing two-way stop intersection of Route 20 (Constitution Highway) and Route 231 (Blue Ridge Turnpike) with a single-lane roundabout

Approximately 3,800 vehicles use Route 20 daily. The traffic count on Route 231 is about 1,200 vehicles per day.

Construction is anticipated to take about one year and will require periodic lane closures.

Benefits

This project will improve safety and reduce crashes.
