Nov. 14, 2017: The Route 230 bridge over the Conway River is open to two-way traffic and the temporary signals have been removed. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures controlled by flagging through Nov. 20 while the contractor performs final project tasks.
In July 2016, VDOT began construction on the rehabilitation of the substandard Route 230 (Wolftown-Hood Road) bridge over the Conway River, located at the Greene-Madison county line. The existing concrete bridge was built in 1939 and has a sufficiency rating of 47.6 on a scale of 0 (poor) to 100 (very good).
VDOT will replace the superstructure of the Conway River bridge, including its deck and riding surface, as well as its piers. The existing abutments will remain in place, but will be extended to support the wider bridge deck.
Beginning in late September and throughout the bulk of the work, two-way traffic will use a single 11-foot travel lane to cross the bridge, controlled with signals on both ends of the project. Large vehicles, including tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles, should detour around the project via Route 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 33 (Spotswood Trail).
The Conway River bridge carries 3,100 vehicles per day, according to a 2015 count.
