Under Construction: Bridge Maintenance Projects

Cost and schedule ►

Under Construction by State Forces

Route 606 (Dickerson Road), Albemarle County

VDOT will rehabilitate the Route 606 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Rivanna River in Albemarle County.

Beginning Sept. 3, the road will be closed to through traffic at the bridge with a posted detour while crews replace the 70-foot truss with a new truss.

The existing bridge was built in 1924 and has a 3-ton weight restriction. Once construction is complete on Dec. 20, weather permitting, the bridge will be open to all legal loads.

During the closure, traffic will use Route 29 to Lewis and Clark Drive to Quail Run which carries traffic back to Route 606.

Route 767 (Tenerife Road), Fauquier County

VDOT will soon begin work to replace the Route 767 (Tenerife Road) bridge over Walnut Branch in Fauquier County.

To accommodate local traffic on the dead-end road, the project will be completed in phases:

  • Starting the week of Sept. 23 and continuing daily until project completion, traffic will be controlled by flagging.
  • A full 12-hour closure of the bridge is expected to remove the existing superstructure and place the new superstructure. A date for the full closure has not yet been scheduled.

The existing Walnut Branch bridge, which was built in 1970, is posted with a 13-ton weight restriction. After construction, the bridge will be open to all legal-weight vehicles.

The bridge carries approximately 230 vehicles daily, according to 2018 traffic data.

Under Construction by Contract Crews

Interstate 64, Albemarle County

Under a $2,505,565 construction contract, Virginia Department of Transportation contractor Curtis Contracting, Inc. of West Point will work on three Interstate 64 bridges in Albemarle County. The work will require extended weekend single lane closures. Construction on all three bridges will be complete by May 2020.

Benefits

The small bridge program rehabilitates aging bridges that serve county residents. If not replaced, the existing bridges will continue to deteriorate and would eventually have to be closed to vehicular traffic.
