In Design: Route 670 Connector Road, Greene County
In 2016, Greene County applied for and received SMART SCALE funding (click here for application) to construct a connector road between Route 29 (Seminole Trail) and Route 670 (Preddy Creek Road). The proposed roadway will be two lanes, one in each direction, with 4-foot paved shoulders on each side.
VDOT held a location public hearing for this project on May 21, 2019. The project team presented three options, described below, for public feedback. VDOT is reviewing feedback received from the meeting and will submit a packet of information to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for its consideration. If an alternative is approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, the project will move forward to the design phase and a separate Design Public Hearing will be held at a future date.
The proposed alignment of the new two-lane roadway will intersect Route 670 directly across from Autumn Oaks Road, creating a four-way intersection. The connector road will intersect Route 29 approximately 1,675 feet south of the signalized intersection of Route 607. Left and right turn lanes on Route 670 may be needed in the future but will not be included as part of this alternative. The estimated construction cost for this alternative is $3.8 million. The estimated cost for right of way acquisition and utility relocation is $720,000.
This alternative will realign Route 670 to provide direct access to Route 29. The new two-lane roadway will intersect Route 29 approximately 1,250 feet south of the signalized intersection of Route 607. This alternative better accommodates future growth and eliminates the need for turn lanes to be added in the future. The estimated construction cost for this alternative is $3.7 million. The estimated cost for right of way acquisition and utility relocation is $850,000.
This SMART SCALE project will improve connectivity and accommodate future commercial and residential growth in Greene County. The two-lane connector road will mitigate congestion, reduce delays during peak commuting hours and improve safety.
