In Design: Route 726 (James River Road), Albemarle County

VDOT proposes replacing the existing one-lane timber deck bridge on Route 726 (James River Road) over Totier Creek. The bridge was built in 1932 is considered structurally deficient.  

The new bridge will be constructed with a concrete deck and accommodate two lanes of traffic.

During the six-month construction period, VDOT will close Route 726 to through traffic at the bridge site with a posted detour route.

The Totier Creek bridge carries approximately 1,100 vehicles per day.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2023.


The new bridge will be open to all legal weight vehicles and accommodate two lanes of traffic.

Public hearing: July 25, 2018
Public comment period ends: August 4, 2018
Right of way acquisition and utility relocation: Spring 2019
Construction begins: Spring 2023
Construction completion: Fall 2023
