Fauquier County applied for Revenue Sharing and Transportation Alternative funding for the Waterloo Bridge restoration project. Both applications were approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board on June 20, 2018.
The project was advertised for construction bids on Feb. 12, 2019 but bids were not affordable. VDOT re-advertised the project in October.
The 139-year-old Waterloo bridge was closed to traffic Jan. 15, 2014 due to its deteriorated condition.
The truss structure, made of wrought iron and built in 1878, was posted for a three-ton maximum vehicle weight prior to the closure. Despite that restriction and numerous repairs through the years, advancing age and the weather took their toll on the bridge’s supporting members.
Following a structural inspection, VDOT bridge engineers determined that the deterioration was too severe to continue to allow traffic on the bridge.
For the 680 vehicles that used the bridge each day, the closure requires a detour using Route 211 (Lee Highway) and Route 688 (Leeds Manor Road) in Fauquier County. Route 613 (Jeffersonton Road) on the east side of the bridge will be closed to through traffic. On the Culpeper County side traffic will still be able to use Route 613 (Waterloo Road) and Route 622 (Old Bridge Road) as far east as the intersection of those two routes.
With this project, VDOT proposes to restore the Waterloo bridge and return it to service.
The proposed project involves dismantling and removing the truss and making repairs, then reinstalling the bridge. It is anticipated that some bridge components will not be fit for continued use and will be replaced with new materials. However, every effort will be made to replicate the look of the historic bridge, including its green paint color.
With this project, the bridge’s piers will be repaired, and the 15 approach spans will receive new steel beams and a timber deck. No significant improvements to the roadway approaches are envisioned.
Removing and reinstalling the bridge will require the removal of trees and other foliage in its immediate vicinity.
Following the construction phase, the bridge is expected to be reopened to traffic with a 12-ton weight restriction.
This project will return the Waterloo bridge to service.
