Recently Completed: Lansdowne Road Repair
Cost and schedule ►
The City of Fredericksburg will temporarily close Lansdowne Road to all traffic beginning Monday, April 9 to repair a sinkhole.
Recently, crews discovered a sinkhole which had formed near the edge of the roadway and permanent repairs must be made to prevent it from affecting the travel lanes.
Lansdowne Road will close to traffic beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 9 and will remain closed until the project is complete.
Weather permitting, work is anticipated to take three weeks to complete.
While this is a city project, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is coordinating with crews with the implementation of the road closure and recommended detour routes.
VDOT will adjust signal timings at certain intersections to improve operations with the simutaleous closures of Lansdowne Road and the emergency road closure of Benchmark Road in Spotsylvania County.
The adjusted signal timings will also go into effect on Monday, April 9 at the following intersections:
- Rt. 1/Jefferson Davis Highway and Mine Road
- Rt. 17 Business/Tidewater Trail at Rt. 608 Benchmark Road
- Rt. 636/Mine Road and Rt. 638/Lansdowne Road
- Rt. 636/Mine Road and Falcon Drive
- Rt. 636/Mine Road and Hardwood Lane
Traffic engineers will monitor travel conditions and make further signal timing adjustments if needed.
Benchmark Road closed in mid-February to traffic between Route. 17 and Mine Road for motorist safety after intense rain caused the roadway over three drainage pipes to fail.

Message boards will be posted next week.
