Under Construction: Route 628 (Winding Creek Road)
Cost and schedule ►
Winding Creek Road remains closed to through traffic between Embrey Mill Road and Walpole Street in Stafford County. The road is being slightly widened and improved under permit, as part of a proffered agreement with Stafford.
The road closed to traffic in March 2021 and was anticipated to be closed for approximately six months, through September 2021. This timeline has been extended. No reopening date is immediately available.
The development agreement requires the road to be built in accordance with state standards before it can be accepted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and reopened to traffic. An inspection of the road indicated that the work did not meet standards in September. Developer and county officials along with VDOT are currently coordinating regarding additional required improvements. As information on the reopening timeline is available, it will be posted to this project page.
Detour Route
Winding Creek Road will be slightly widened, with each travel lane expanded from the existing 10 feet to 12 feet. A 6-ft. gravel shoulder will be built on each side.
Detour signs are posted to guide motorists along the recommended detour route after Winding Creek Road has closed to traffic:
- Route 630 (Courthouse Road)
- Route 1947 (Walpole Street)
Message boards are posted to notify motorists of the road closure.
