Construction to repair Route 605 (Indian Road) in Gloucester County will begin on Monday, Aug. 13 to replace the large drainage pipes underneath the road between Fary’s Mill Road and Mohican Drive.
Weather permitting, the road will re-open by mid-October.
On Tuesday, July 31, Indian Road was closed after intense rain caused the pipes and the roadway to fail.
VDOT has obtained an emergency authorization to proceed with a contract to replace the concrete pipes.
Howard Brothers Contractor, Inc. has been hired by the Department and will begin work next week. The road will remain closed while work is underway. Construction is anticipated to take 10 weeks to complete.
The existing structure was a triple line of 48-inch diameter concrete pipes. The new structure will have two 48 inch diameter double line concrete pipe and a single 60 inch diameter concrete pipe to enhance drainage in the area. New end walls will also be installed.
Signs are posted along the recommended detour and will remain in place until the pipe replacement project and road repairs are complete.
The recommended detour is approximately 11 miles :
- Route 603 (Figg Shop Road)
- Route 198 (Dutton Road)
- Route 678 (Harcum Road)
- Route 605 (Indian Road)
According to a recent traffic count, approximately 1,000 vehicles a day travel Indian Road.
