What is being done?

This project will focus on preventative pavement maintenance work for I-264 from Bowers Hill to the Downtown Tunnel, in both directions. The project covers approximately 6.5 miles.

Work will include patching isolated asphalt pavement failures, sealing cracks in the asphalt pavement and placement of a thin hot mix asphalt concrete overlay (THMACO).

The purpose of this work is to preserve valuable pavement assets with preventive maintenance which is less expensive than deferring work until major rehabilitation is required.  Pavement markings and markers will be changed out/upgraded, and guardrail will be updated to meet current design requirements.

What are the traffic impacts?

The contractor will begin asphalt overlay and shoulder work in Portsmouth near the Downtown Tunnel heading west toward the I-664 Bowers Hill interchange.

Single lane closures will be needed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, for paving activities.

After work is done westbound, crews will then travel eastbound on I-264 from Bowers Hill toward the Downtown Tunnel.
