About The Project
Beginning in mid-August, 2009, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a substantial electrical lighting upgrade to the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, east bound. Westbound traffic will not be affected. The project is expected to be completed by Spring 2011.The tunnel lighting project will consist of replacing the light fixtures and all related wiring and conduit. All work associated with the project will take place inside the tunnel. The work zone will begin in Hampton near the entrance of the eastbound tube and end on the Norfolk side of the tunnel.
Motorists should expect overnight single lane closures for the duration of the project with one lane open to vehicular traffic at all times. All project related activities will be conducted during evening hours, beginning no earlier than 8 p.m. and ending no later than 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. No weekend work is anticipated.
To avoid travel delays associated with the overnight lane closures in the work zone, we suggest the I-664Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route. Click the link below to view the alternate route map.
