What's Being Done

This project adds a left turn lane from Jefferson Avenue southbound into Newport News City Center (creating a double left turn at the intersection from Jefferson southbound onto Thimble Shoals). Dedicated right turn lanes from Jefferson northbound onto Thimble Shoals and from Thimble Shoals onto Jefferson northbound will also be created. Additional improvements include installation of sidewalks and pedestrian signal controls.

Impact on Traffic

To help alleviate traffic congestion, there will NOT be any no normally scheduled lane closures on Jefferson Ave. during morning (5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.) and evening (3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.) rush hours. Motorists should expect traffic delays and lane shifts throughout the project duration.
