About the Project:
This three-phase proposed project will improve Mount Pleasant Road (Route 165) in the Great Bridge area of the City of Chesapeake. Each phase will be awarded to construction contractors separately. The three phases are as follows:
- Phase 1
This phase is a $1.7 million dollar improvement which is necessary because of the high accident rate in the area. The new design will realign a sharp curve on Mount Pleasant Road and change the existing roadway which consists of two 11-foot lanes with a one-foot shoulder to two 12-foot lanes with a total shoulder width of six-feet. Five-feet of this area will be paved. The scheduled construction advertising date for this phase is July 2010.
- Phase 2
The second phase will add a left turn lane on Mount Pleasant Road at Fentress Airfield Road at a cost of $2.8 million. The scheduled construction advertising date is June 2010.
- Phase 3
The final phase costing $15.6 million will widen Mount Pleasant Road. This project would extend from the Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168) to Etheridge Road. The $15.6 million project cost includes $1.53 million for preliminary engineering/design, $4.8 million in right-of-way costs and $9.28 million for construction. The scheduled construction advertising date is February 2013.
Total Estimated Cost for Entire Project: $20.1 million
Current Status:
Preliminary Engineering for the widening of Mount Pleasant Road was authorized in November 2007. VDOT is currently in the process of selecting a design consultant for the project.
(The dates for this project are based on the current Six-Year Plan and are subject to change when the Six-Year Plan is updated in 2009.)
