About the Project:

This project replaces an old bridge with a new 52-foot concrete beam bridge to carry Route 58 (Second Avenue in the City of Franklin/Carrsville Highway in Isle of Wight County) over the Blackwater River.

The project includes time of year restrictions for stream work to protect anadromous fish. Right- of-way has been acquired from ten parcels, eight of which are owned by International Paper/Sustainable Forests.

The new approach roadway will accommodate four lanes of traffic and a left turn lane onto International Paper. Both sides of the roadway will have sidewalks.

Project Purpose:

The new bridge replaces a substandard and deteriorated steel girder bridge.

Traffic Alert:

Motorists should be alert to a traffic shift on US Route 58 Business over the Blackwater River. US Route 58 will be reduced from four to two lanes in both the east and west bound directions from the entrance of International Paper to Mechanic Street beginning Wednesday, January 28, through May, 2009.
