These are two concurrent projects designed to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety along the project corridor by addressing deficiencies in lane and shoulder width and horizontal and vertical alignment. The project will begin at East Main Street (Route 789) and end on Route 13 Business in Accomack County, and for a length of approximately 2.87 miles on Pennsylvania Avenue (Route 609) in the town of Onley.
Typical Section and Geometrics
Route 609 is classified as a rural major collector. The plans are to widen the existing roadway in the town of Onley to include two, 11-foot travel lanes with three-foot accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians, and curb and gutter. The roadway in the county will be widened to a 22-foot roadway with two, 11-foot travel lanes and six-foot shoulders, of which four feet will be paved to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians.
Construction began in July 2015 with crews setting up detour signs. The scheduled completion date is July 2017.
Crews have completed paving operations on Route 609 from the Town of Onley to Daughtery Road on May 20, 2016.
