About the Project
This project, in partnership with Fairfax County, will extend Frontier Drive from its southern terminus at Franconia-Springfield Parkway to Loisdale Road in order to relieve traffic congestion and improve access to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station, the Springfield Mall and Town Center area, and the General Services Administration (GSA) warehouse on Springfield Center Drive.
The project (location map shown on right, with newly constructed roadway in blue and existing roadway in orange) will include:
- A four-lane divided roadway (combination of new construction and improvements to existing Springfield Center Drive) with on-road bicycle facilities, as well as a shared-use path on one side and a sidewalk on the other side
- Braided ramps at the Frontier Drive/Franconia-Springfield Parkway interchange
- Improvements to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station circulatory road
- Franconia-Springfield Metro station parking garage access improvements
The preliminary design is being developed for the preferred alternative alignment selected by Fairfax County in 2012.
The project's preliminary engineering phase is being financed with state, local and Northern Virginia Transportation Authority funding.
