About the Project

This project is replacing concrete pavement along 1,000 linear feet of westbound I-66 in all four lanes and on a portion of the ramp to Route 50 in Fairfax County.

The project is using three different pavement replacement technologies: traditional cast-in-place, jointed precast pavement panels, and a precast, pre-stressed, post-tensioned system. The two precast systems are the focus of the project, being constructed as a demonstration through the Highways for LIFE program sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration.

A showcase demonstrating the replacement technologies is planned at the project site for late September. Click here for more information on the process and demonstration.

Traffic Impacts

Crews are working overnight, Sundays through Thursdays. Throughout the project, traffic may be reduced to one lane getting by on the shoulder on these nights. Two lanes westbound are closed at Route 50 at 9 p.m. and the third is closed at 10 p.m. each night. All lanes are reopened each morning by 5 a.m.

Motorists may also expect periodic overnight closures of the ramp from westbound I-66 to westbound Route 50 (Exit 57) from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Signs will direct motorists on to the Fairfax County Parkway (Exit 55), and back to Route 50.
