About the Project
This project repaired two ramps on the existing highway overpass carrying northbound Route I-95 over Norfolk Southern Railway. They are near the north end of the Springfield Interchange. The two ramps had three spans made of prestressed concrete and were in dilapidated condition. The project carries one lane from each ramp for
a total of 2 lanes to I-395 Northbound lane. The total width of
the bridge is 57 feet which consists of railing, median and curb. Its
superstructure as well as substructure including deck required
rehabilitation.
Crews repaired the distressed areas of the
beams, diaphragms and deck, replaced expansion joints, repaired and
repainted bearings, made miscellaneous repairs to the concrete substructure and
superstructure, repaired cracks and delamination, repaired concrete slope
protection and the surface of the existing deck, replaced the approach pavement
and damaged guard rail.
This work did not affect the railway's operation or signals. Trucks with wide loads were unable to use these ramps while under construction.
