About the Project

In April 2007, VDOT began construction on a 2.23-mile segment of Route 236, to improve traffic flow and ease congestion. The project runs through both the City and County of Fairfax.

The spot improvements include new right- and left-turn lanes, signalization, a drainage system, sidewalks and other improvements at various intersections (Pickett Road, Guinea Road, Old Hickory Road, Vanda Lane, Iva Lane, Prosperity Avenue, Woodburn Road, Wakefield Chapel Road and Lake Drive).

Project Background

In June, 1994 a corridor study for this section of Route 236 was begun to help identify possible improvements to enhance traffic flow and safety.

Through the use of micro-simulation computer techniques, the congestion hot-spots of Route 236 were validated and quantified. A variety of possible improvements were simulated and analyzed to help identify the best fix.
