About the Project

This project aims to reduce congestion and improve safety by widening Rolling Road (Route 638) from two to four lanes between Viola Street and Old Keene Mill Road, with pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

The project is currently in preliminary design and the project team is working with Fairfax County to consider an alternative design option, which includes the possibility of undergrounding overhead utilities. This option will be evaluated based on feasibility, potential impacts, cost and schedule. Once design is further completed and refined the project team will provide updates to the public and additional opportunities for community input.

This project is being planned as part of a phased approach:

Phase 1 - Initial improvements to Old Keene Mill Road
Includes interim improvements by adding dual-left turn lanes from Rolling Road to westbound Old Keene Mill Road, upgrading the signal and improving the intersection alignment.

Phase 2 -  Widening and other improvements
Includes widening Rolling Road from two to four lanes between Viola Street and Old Keene Mill Road, signal upgrades, pedestrian and bike facilities and improvements to access management.

If you would like to provide feedback at any time, please send comments to meetingcomments@vdot.virginia.gov. Please include “Rolling Road Widening” in the subject line.
