What's Being Done

The purpose of this project is to raise the elevation of the existing Route 1 bridge and its approaches to Neabsco Creek about seven feet. This grade change is necessary due to repeated flooding of the existing bridge.

The new bridge will also be widened to six lanes, to accommodate ultimate corridor improvements as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities. This project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2010.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, motorists can expect lane closures during off-peak travel times. There will be no lane closures during rush hour.  A detour road will be constructed parallel to Route 1 so that the existing bridge can be demolished and the new bridge constructed.  Two travel lanes in each direction will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.
