Project Background
This section of Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) experiences severe congestion both eastbound and westbound during the morning and evening rush. Widening and upgrading intersections will help relieve congestion during peak hours, improve air quality, and improve the road's operation and safety. In 2007, Route 7 carried 65,000 vehicles a day in this area and by 2032, is expected to carry 103,000 vehicles a day. The existing road is a four-lane divided Urban Principal Arterial. The speed limit is 55 mph.
What's Being Done
This project will widen Route 7 from four to six lanes with a raised median from Rolling Holly Drive to Reston Avenue. The project also includes:- A 10-foot-wide shared-use path in both directions
- Lengthened turn lanes
- A new traffic signal at the intersection of Redberry Court and the relocated Woody’s Golf Course entrance
- Improved intersection operation, particularly at Georgetown Pike, Route 7 and Seneca Road
Major utilities are located along this section of Route 7, including a 24-inch gas line, a 12-inch water line, fiber optic communications, telephone lines, and electrical lines.
Right of Way Requirements
Some minor “strip takes” of land from properties with road frontage are anticipated. No displacements or relocations of families or businesses are anticipated. As the project is further developed, additional easements for maintenance, construction, grading, storm water management, and utility relocations may be required beyond the proposed right of way shown on the project plans. For further information about the right of way process, please contact:Brian Costello, District Right of Way Manager
