Recently Completed: Route 7 Westbound over Sugarland Run Bridge Rehabilitation in Fairfax County

This project rehabilitated the westbound Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) bridge over Sugarland Run. The bridge was originally built in 1947 and widened in 2000.

The improvements included:

• A new concrete bridge deck.
• Bridge pier and abutment repairs.
• Guardrail upgrades and new curb and gutter in the area of the bridge.

The project originally called for further improvements including widening the bridge and extending the acceleration lane from the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) on-ramp to Dranesville Road (Route 228); however, these components were later removed from the project due to funding constraints. 

This section of Route 7 (westbound and eastbound combined) averages 59,000 vehicles a day.

Estimated Costs 
Preliminary Engineering - $1.2 million
Construction - $3.1 million
Total - $4.4 million

The project was financed with state and federal State of Good Repair funds used for bridges.

Benefits 

This project aimed to improve safety and extend the overall life of the bridge.
