About the Project
VDOT widened one mile of West Ox Road from two to four lanes between Penderbrook Drive (Route 6558) and Ox Trail (Route 6985).The reconstruction of West Ox Road included new right- and left-turn lanes, sidewalk, 16-foot-wide raised median, and multi-purpose trail. Crews also improved sight distance by straightening curves and reducing hills. Vale Road and Waples Mills Road were separated and realigned to connect to West Ox Road via two signals.
With average daily traffic of 25,000 vehicles per day, crews worked in phases to maintain traffic on West Ox Road during construction. The projected traffic count for West Ox Road exceeds 43,000 vehicles per day by 2020.
Project Background
A project to improve West Ox Road was proposed in the late 1980s. The initial project included improvements from Route 50 to Lawyers Road. The design for this project was completed with a public hearing held in June 1990. The project was endorsed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board in January 1991.The project was deferred until 1998, when it was reinitiated with the original limits divided into two segments. In 1999, public input from citizen information meeting led to additional adjustments in the project limits. A second meeting was held in 2001 concerning the southern section.
Environmental Considerations
An Environmental Document was approved in 1991. During construction, all reasonable efforts were made to protect the environment with respect to dust, silt, and erosion. Stormwater management facilities were incorporated into this project.
