What's Being Done

The proposed project will offset the north part of Sliding Hill Road approximately 300 feet west of its current location. At the new intersection of Sliding Hill Road and New Ashcake Road, Sliding Hill Road will have two through lanes and left turn lanes to enter New Ashcake Road. Provisions will also be made for New Ashcake Road west to have a future through lane, left and right turn lane. New Ashcake east will have two lanes from the intersection.

At the project limits, both Sliding Hill Road and New Ashcake Road will remain as two lane construction. The old intersection will be removed but most of the remaining old Sliding Hill Road that is north of the current intersection will remain in place. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the south end of the old Sliding Hill Road, to allow vehicles to turn around.

Traffic studies are conducted annually. The current 2008 traffic engineering studies have shown that a traffic signal is not warranted at the intersection at this time. However, traffic signal warrant models are being re-run to determine if the signals are still not needed. If needed, the construction plans will be adjusted adequately. Why Does the Intersection Need to be Reconstructed?

Due to heavy congestion and extensive delay times at the Ashcake and Sliding Hill Road intersection, lanes are being added to improve traffic flow.

Background

This will be a four phase construction project to enhance traffic flow. Based on the current construction schedule, the project should be complete by June 2010 and the estimated project cost is $9.3 million. VDOT held a public hearing to receive input from the community on May 4, 2004 at Atlee High School in Mechanicsville, VA.
