What's being done?
The $3.1 million project involves demolishing the current Route 220 Business bridge over the Norfolk and Southern railroad tracks and Route 639 (Phospho Springs Road) and constructing a new steel plate girder bridge at the same location.
Features
The new bridge will be 32 feet tall and 270 feet long with one 60-foot span and two 105-foot spans, supported by five four-foot-tall beams. Two piers, measuring 22 and 23 feet, will support the bridge.
The new bridge will provide two 12-foot travel lanes with a five-foot-wide bike lane on each side.
To demolish the existing bridge, the contractor will saw cut the bridge and remove it in pieces.
During construction of the new bridge, the contractor will use approximately 1,000 cubic yards of concrete, 130,000 pounds of re-enforced steel and 2,000 tons of stone.
The bridge is located 0.2 mile east of Route 220 in the Town of Ridgeway. Approximately 4,500 vehicles use the bridge each day.
Funding to replace the Route 220 Business bridge over Route 639 was provided through an earmark in the federal transportation bill at the request of Congressman Virgil Goode, Jr.
Project Updates
The Route 220 Business bridge is closed and will remain closed until Fall 2010. Traffic is being detoured less than a mile onto Route 220 and Route 87. Signs will be posted on surrounding roads to advise motorists of the closure. Route 639 (Phospho Springs Road) also will be closed periodically during construction.
