What's being done?
The $2.4 million project involves demolishing the current Route 701 bridge over the Smith River and constructing a new steel plate girder bridge. The eastern end of the bridge (at Route 57) will be shifted approximately 40 feet downstream.
The bridge is located between Route 57 and Route 682 (River Road) in Fieldale.
Features
The new bridge will be 32 feet tall and 232 feet long with one 90-foot span and two 70-foot spans, supported by five four-foot tall beams. Two piers, measuring 25 feet each, will support the bridge.
The new bridge will provide two 12-foot travel lanes with a five-foot wide sidewalk on the upstream (northern side).
To demolish the existing bridge, the contractor will saw cut the bridge and remove it in pieces.
During construction of the new bridge, the contractor will use approximately 600 cubic yards of concrete and 77,410 pounds of re-enforced steel.
Approximately 7,700 vehicles use the bridge each day.
Project updates
On Friday, April 10, the Route 701 (Field Avenue) bridge over the Smith River will be closed to traffic. The old, iron bridge is located in Henry County near Fieldale between Route 57 and Route 682 (River Road). The bridge will be closed, so it can be demolished and replaced.Traffic will be detoured between Route 701 and Route 57 onto Route 682 and Route 609 (Daniels Creek Road).
Work on the new bridge is expected to be completed by November 2010.
