What is proposed?

Increasing traffic volumes and safety concerns for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles have prompted VDOT and the City of Roanoke to pursue improving the section of 10th Street that starts 0.018 mile south of Fairfax Avenue and extends to Williamson Road.

The proposed project will widen the travel lanes and provide bicycle lanes, curb and gutter and sidewalks. Turn lanes will be added at 10th Street’s intersections with Hunt Avenue, Grayson Avenue, Orange Avenue and Williamson Road.

The purpose of this project is to improve the existing roadway to provide curb and gutter, sidewalks and bike lanes.  Additional improvements will focus on improving the safety and flow of traffic through the area while developing a bicycle/pedestrian friendly environment.  Lick Run and the Lick Run Greenway will pass through a concrete arch under 10th Street.

The existing traffic signal at the intersection of Orange Avenue and 11th Street will be removed and left turn lanes added on Orange Avenue at the intersection with 10th Street.  Existing signal equipment along with 10th Street will be replaced.  Left turn lanes will be constructed along 10th Street at Orange Avenue, Grayson Avenue and Hunt Avenue.

A public hearing was held on the 10th Street project on July 30, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. ad Lucy Addison Middle School.
