Project Details

The proposed project will include reconstructing inside shoulders and installing high tension cable guardrail in the median of Interstate 64 and between westbound I-64 and Winterberry Avenue. Improving the drainage system and upgrading substandard guardrail will also be part of the project. The project is approximately five miles long and extends from 2.8 miles west to 2.3 miles east of the Low Moor interchange at exit 21.

The average daily traffic volume on this portion of I-64 was 20,954 vehicles per day in 2005 and is projected to increase to 23,258 vehicles per day by 2012.

The estimated cost is $20.6 million, including $1,989,000 for preliminary engineering, $53,800 for right of way, and $18,579,989 for construction.

Benefits

This project will improve safety conditions along this portion of I-64 and Winterberry Avenue by protecting motorists from cross-over collisions between eastbound and westbound traffic on these routes.

What's Next

Design approval is anticipated in mid-2009, with right of way activities in late 2009 and advertisement for construction in late 2010.

During Construction

At least one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction of I-64 during construction.
