The purpose of this project is to replace a deteriorated, restricted weight-limit bridge over Cedar Creek along Route 708 in Rockbridge County.
Route 708 consists of two 9-foot lanes with narrow shoulders and ditches. The road crosses Cedar Creek using a single-lane bridge approximately 15’ 3” wide. The bridge is located just east of the intersection with Route 608.
A new truss bridge will be built to meet the minimum requirements of AASHTO Very-Low-Volume guidelines. The proposed bridge will be 15’ 10” wide, and will be built in approximately the same location. No roadway improvements will be done other than the immediate approaches to the bridge.
The existing bridge has an average traffic count of 87 vehicles per day, and a projected count of 88 vehicles per day for the design year of 2026.
This project is funded with federal funds and has a total estimate of $1,485, 070. The estimated cost for preliminary engineering is $300,000; rightof way is $50,000, and construction is $1,135,070.
