Shenandoah County - Route 675 Bridge over Stony Creek |
Project at a Glance
On August 10, 2007 the Route 675 bridge over Stony Creek was permanently closed due to deterioration of portions of the bridge. The one-lane concrete deck arch bridge built in the early 1900s was posted for a 10-ton load. The superstructure (a concrete arch) and substructures (piers or abutments) were in poor condition with advanced stages of concrete deterioration, including spalling (breaking away of pieces of concrete) and scour (flowing water is eating away stream bed material causing undermining of the footings). Cracking occurred throughout the concrete arches and the top of the superstructure.
Construction of the new bridge began in the summer of 2008 and was completed in fall 2008.
