Project Details

The project is located on Route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) in Warren County, from Route 628 to .30 mile north of Route 628, in the Bentonville area. Currently there is a low-water bridge over the South Fork Shenandoah River and to the north there is a small bridge across an abandon channel. There are no existing bicycle or pedestrian accommodations on these two crossings.

The proposed project includes replacing the existing substandard low water structure over the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and the narrow bridge over an abandon channel. The new facility will accommodate a safe pedestrian crossing over this crossing.

Located approximately 50 feet upstream of the existing structure, the new two-lane bridge will be 34-feet wide and 320-feet long. East and west approaches to the bridge will consist of two 11-foot lanes, with a 5-foot-wide shoulder on the west side and a 5-foot-wide sidewalk with curb and gutter on the east side. Where needed, 4-foot ditches will be provided.

The existing bridge over the abandon channel will be replaced with a double 10-foot by 8-foot box culvert located approximately 20 feet upstream from the existing structure. Both approaches to the box culvert will consist of two 11-foot lanes with 5-foot shoulders, and 4-foot ditches provided where needed.

Route 613 is located in a rural farming area, which includes several residential dwellings, a canoe rental business and a camp ground. The existing bridge and project area is surrounded by Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) land on the southeast side, United States National Forrest land on the northwest side and Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) property on the northeast side.

The average daily traffic count in 2009 for this portion of Route 613 is 228 vehicles. This number is projected to increase in 2023 to 236 vehicles per day. The current road is heavily populated during the warm weather months for camping, fishing, and river recreational activities.

The existing bridge built in 1923 is 266 feet long with a single 11-foot wide lane. The structure over the abandon channel, built in 1918, is 22 feet long and features a single 10-foot wide lane.

This is a Forest Highway project with all of the funding from Federal Forrest Highway Funds.

Benefits of Project

This project replaces an existing low water and substandard narrow bridge over the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and a narrow bridge over an abandon channel. The project is located on a state maintained road that serves county residents, recreational/ pedestrian traffic and businesses. The new bridge is approximately 14 feet higher than the existing structure and will provide a safer passage for recreational and pedestrian traffic as well as vehicular traffic. In times of high water, the new bridge will not overtop as frequently as the existing bridge does today.

During Construction

The existing bridges will be open during construction and canoe portages in the area will be provided with appropriate signs during the construction.
